In television alone, there are many different aspects that can be analyzed, but this literature review will focus on four aspects of television and how gender and race are represented: advertisements, Spanish-language television, popular adolescent television, and science fiction television. All of these articles have similar, yet varying approaches to answer the questions they pose. Although the articles may vary, there are some aspects they all hold in common; they all recognize that stereotypes are prevalent in television and that this is how people will, inevitably, shape their view on gender and race. Both “Watching Each Other: Portrayals of Gender and Ethnicity in Television Advertisements” and “Gender and Race Portrayals on Spanish-Language Television” focus on how gender and race are portrayed in television - by looking at the common stereotypes and “traditional” characteristics that gender and race each hold. “Watching Each Other” fixated on how men and women (gender) and different races were portrayed in their task/role in advertisements in New Zealand. The researchers of this article felt that the production process is more negotiated (both socially and historically), as opposed to being subjected to the common media groupings in other television networks and shows - they do not necessarily need stereotypes to create a show(White, Deveau, and Adams 2015). The researchers of this study acknowledge that stereotypes are a prevalent component of television and look to see what science fiction shows (specifically Battlestar Galactica) are doing about
