In the Novel “Little Bee” by Chris Cleave, a major theme is hope. Hope Gives people something to live for. Compassion plays a big role in hope by showing the love for others and giving people a reason to live. Stories throughout the world show how compassion keeps people alive until the compassion dies. Another way to portray hope is through promises, they allow people to believe that something will definitely happen or will never happen. There are a variety of parts to hope, all of which give people reasons to stay alive. Chris Cleave displays hope in an assortment of ways and situations throughout the novel. When discussing hope a character who gives everyone in this story hope is Charlie or “Batman”. The hero’s character Batman gives Charlie hope by allowing him to think that as long as he pretends to be “Batman” he can protect everyone. At the end of this novel, Little Bee who is a Nigerian teenager is being taken away by soldiers at a beach in Nigeria, Little Bee says, “the local children ran with Charlie… and I cried with joy when the children all began to play together,” on page 266. An example of compassion in this novel is Little Bee’s love for Sarah and Charlie. Sarah has done so much to help Little Bee including cutting off her own finger to save Little Bee’s Life. Sarah’s sympathy toward Little Bee caused her to form a sort of compassion for Sarah. Little Bee loves Charlie as a younger brother and acts as a mother figure to him when sarah is unable to. On page 222 Little Bee tries to run and make her escape in London, but she can not leave Charlie,”looking very small and sad,” with Lawrence and Sarah with “their arms around each other.” Without her to take care of Charlie she fears that he would be stuck being alone with Lawrence and Sarah, not being correctly taken care of.
