The holocaust was an awful time where millions of people were killed. Auszhwitz is one of the most known concentration camps during the holocaust. The Auschwitz concentration camp held many jews as prisoners. The Jews were treated like slaves and were forced into labor. For Jews in Auschwitz, life was almost unbearable as over a million people had to live through brutal conditions. The living conditions in Auschwitz were insufferable. Jews were forced into concentration camps by Nazis and were treated horribly. A big problem for prisoners was that the barraks they lived in were usually damp, and they were filled with rats and lice (Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum). They lived in horrible conditions. “Dampness, leaky roofs, and the fouling of straw and straw mattresses by prisoners suffering from diarrhea made difficult living conditions worse” (“Auschwitz-Birkenau: Living Conditions, Labor & Executions.”). Not only were the living conditions bad, starvation was too. Many were faced with slave labor that usually ended in death. According to “Those deemed fit enough for slave labor were then immediately registered, tattooed with a serial number, undressed, deloused, had their body hair shaven off, showered while their clothes were disinfected…” (“Auschwitz-Birkenau: History & Overview.”) If a Jew wasn not concidered “fit” for labor, they would be killed. “Newly arrived persons classified by the SS physicians as unfit for labor were sent to the gas chambers: these included the ill, the elderly, pregnant women and children.” (“Auschwitz-Birkenau: History & Overview.”).
