Living off the grid is defined as being “not connected to or served by publicly or privately managed utilities” by Merriam-Webster.com. The interest in living off-grid is for several reasons, such as practicing self-reliance and making more sustainable choices for the environment. Living off the grid has no value as purchasing necessities for off-grid living is still expensive, negatively affects those not lively off-grid, and most people living off-grid still contribute to the global economy which produces vast amounts of pollution and negatively impacts the environment. Source A describes that people living off-grid might choose to live off the grid as they believe it will positively impact the environment as they will be sustainably using energy as they would use less for the same amount of usage and the grid causes “global warming, pollution, drained aquifers, the devastating effects of fracking”. Negating that statement, source E describes living off-grid as “more toward aspiration than reality” as “most off-grid people were still enjoying the benefits of the global economy”. Despite using less energy than an average household on the grid as expressed in source C, living off-grid and relying on grocery stores and phones still negatively impact the environment. Both industries greatly contribute to global warming. Grocery stores get supplies from trucks carrying produce and supplies across the country by using fossil fuels, and meat products also greatly contribute to global warming and pollution through animal waste and transportation. Phones require the mining of certain minerals as they make up different parts of the phone. Mining leads to water and air pollution as waste minerals can leak into surface and groundwater, and large tools and trucks used for mining and transportation also use fossil fuels.
