Coming of age is a young person's transition from childhood to adulthood. When a person is coming of age, they mature. Coming of age is shown by the two main characters in Marigolds by Eugenia Collier and Dead End by Rudolfo Anaya. In Marigolds, Lizabeth heard her parents having a conversation about how they are poor and the gender roles are being reversed when it comes to bringing in money for the family. Her father cries because he is embarrassed and this situation made Lizbeth mature. In Dead End, Maria matured when she had decided whether or not to keep her promise of not losing her education, she made to her deceased mother. In Marigolds, Lizabeth lived in the time of the Great Depression, so she had to work hard and mature faster. One
