Locavores: Boosting The Local Economy

Buying locally has become a trend in America. Although, what people don’t know is this new “trend” is actually not as beneficial as they believe. According to Stephen Budiansky, these people who shop locally all the time, are called “Locavores.” (Delingpole, 2010). Locavores support their local farmers’ markets as well as the local industry. In the next few paragraphs, I’m going to discuss with you how Locavores believe they are lowering their “carbon footprint”, “boosting the local economy”, and getting a “variety” in their diet. According to Rita Klavinski, “The money that is spent with local farmers and growers all stays close to home and is reinvested with businesses and services in your community.” (Klavinski, 2013). Though that might be true, what about the rest of the world? We, the United States, buy many imported fruits and vegetables from poor countries. When we are buying from local farmers’ markets, we are abandoning that export/import process and we are no longer saving the whole world; we are only saving ourselves. Also, local food is quite a bit more expensive than buying food at a grocery store. Basically, selling local food at a farmers’ market, or anywhere else, is a person’s small business so they have to get as much money as they possibly can get. (Singha, 2011). I can say that I have seen local produce at Kroger and it is not much more expensive than their other produce. Contrary to that, like Nikita from Rudi’s Organic Bakery would say, “You may be able to find local produce at your grocery store, but this is rare.” (Nikita, 2012). If so, you are most likely not a locavore. If you know anything about botany, you know that you can’t grow particular crops in the different seasons. For an example, from Rajib Singha, you cannot grow strawberries in winter or pumpkins in spring. (Singha, 2011). These fruits or vegetables get imported to us in their off seasons, which means we are not buying them locally. If you only buy local fruits or vegetables, you are not going to be “able to form a complete balanced diet.” (Nikita, 2012).
