One of the world’s strangest enigmas surrounds Loch Ness centered in the Scottish Highlands. In the early beginnings of Scotland, Loch Ness was formed when the Earth’s crust drastically changed, and made about 31,000 lakes in present day Scotland, due the Great Glen fault (Redfern 117). The Loch, located near the famous Urquhart Castle, is approximately 20 miles long and almost a mile wide and more than 755 feet deep (Redfern 117). Another aspect to Loch Ness was that the water was cold and contained silt because it was once apart of the North Sea (Schach 10-11). According to Kallen, the legend is said to begin in 565 A.D. when St. Columba of Iona, an Irish poet and Clergyman, noticed some Scottish picts upon arriving. The Clergyman recognized …show more content…

The first theory is that Nessie is a cryptocleidus, a prehistoric plesiosaur, because it is the only animal that matches the creatures characteristics (Yorke 20). Evidence to support the theory is due to a colony of plesiosaurs, which are aquatic reptiles said to be extinct 65.5 million years ago, possibly residing in Loch Ness (Redfern 118). Also, due to a minor theory that the prehistoric dinosaur may have survived Global Warming issues, on Earth (Kallen 31). Some skeptics disprove this theory by saying a plesiosaur is not a warm blooded animal and that they were not made to survive Loch Ness’ average 41 degrees fahrenheit waters (Redfern 118). The second theory is the monster is a gigantic eel, which was considered impossible because an eel is incapable of moving the way Nessie is said to move and also due to the fact they cannot be 30 to 40 feet in length (Redfern 118-119). A third theory is that the creature is a paranormal phenomenon and not an actual living being, so far this theory has not been proven or disproven (Redfern 119). The fourth theory was brought forward by a man named Neil Clark in 2006 that Nessie was just an average elephant (Kallen 86). The next theory is that Nessie is a whale, dolphin, and or a giant squid (Schach 19). Finally the last notable theory is Nessie is …show more content…

One of the most famous hoaxes in history is the Surgeon’s Photograph, taken in 1934 (Schach 13).According to Kallen, the photograph was taken by R.Kenneth Wilson when he noticed something in the Loch while driving. After the photograph was taken it was soon published in The London Daily Mail, newspapers, and magazines. The publication of the Surgeon’s photograph tourists began to pour into areas surrounding Loch Ness in order to see if they could see Nessie for themselves (24-25). In The Loch Ness Monster Photo Wallechinsky states in 1993 Christian Spurling, Duke Wetherell’s stepson, claimed the photograph was a hoax. He then stated that he and Wetherell came up with the idea after Wetherell’s false identification of footprints. Spurling eventually reported the image was of a kid’s toy submarine with a serpents head attached
