In the historical fiction novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, the main character, Cassie Logan, a 9-year-old African-American girl who lived in southern Mississippi in the early 1930s when racism was the norm, narrates her perspective on the world around her. The setting of the story, the Logan Land, is important to the Logan family because it is their source of income, the legacy of the land holds an important place in their family history, and they are lucky enough even to own land. Harlan Granger thinks that this way he will have a higher chance of getting the land back while the Logans struggle financially. However, the Logans are not going to give up, as the land is very valuable to them. Cassie’s attitude change about the family’s land can be seen over the course of the text. In the beginning, Cassie was naive and clueless about how valuable the family’s land was to her family. This can be seen on page 7 where it states, “I asked him once why he had to go away, why the land was so important.” This quote shows Cassie questioning her father about the importance of the land and why he had to go away to pay for it, revealing that she has no knowledge yet about the true value of the land. Nonetheless, throughout the story, she sees and experiences a lot. As a result, by the end of the novel, Cassie understands why the land is so important. This is shown on page 276 where it states, “And I cried for those things which had happened in the night and would not pass. I cried for T.J. For T.J. and the land.” This quote indicates that although Cassie has lost her innocence, she now understands the importance of the land and cherishes it. This is because at first, Cassie didn’t understand the value of the land. However, after learning about the legacy of the land and why it is important to her family, she finally realizes the value of it and cherishes it. The theme of the novel, “Sometimes to truly learn the value of something, it needs to be put on the line,” connects to my younger self because, when I was younger, I never valued the money that my parents gave me to buy snacks and spent it recklessly. One day, a kid stole the money that my parents had given me to buy snacks, and at that moment, I got so angry that I realized how much that money was worth and how valuable it is to me. Hence, ever since that day, I have never spent my parents’ money so recklessly (in fact, I refuse to take money from them
