“I think anyone can have TB, it is not choosy.” Nakubheka, the 12 year old from Swaziland with MDR-TB, stated the grim reality of living in a country wracked by disease. Yet, according to the film TB: Silent Killer, TB was treated with as much stigma as HIV/AIDs. This stigma causes people to delay getting diagnosis and treatment. Often people would keep the diagnosis to themselves, remaining at home.
For example episode 11 when a guy named Jason Robert physically attacks a girl named Megan in front of an audience , he behavior is considered deviance because he harms another person. Attacking another person and stalking is prime example that he is different from most people. Another example is episode season 15 episode 10 when detective Benson attacked and kidnapped by a murder. This broke into her apartment and held her captive for four days where he would tie her up and make her watch as he did unspeakable things to another. His behavior would be considered as deviance because what he does is unsocial and it violates what is considered normal in today’s society.
The three movies – Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and The Green Berets – are all movies based on the same historical event – the Vietnam war and US’s involvement in it. Yet, they all presented us with different and narrative point of view and authority figures in order to paint their individual values. The movies’ most obvious differences lie within the choice of their narrative point of view. The Green Beret, the earliest one, was directed by John Wayne and he also starred in the leading role. He uses paid celebrity hosts to help influence his customers and make his product look more credible. He uses presumed credibility based on the celebrities name or a brand customers have heard of in the past, making a buyer presume the product is what is says it should be.

When we look at specific characters such as Kevin, the radio host for the sister town of Night Vale, Desert Bluffs, we see that his deviance is more based on immoral behaviors, but we also see that Kevin's character faces another stigma just through his appearance. For example when he smiles other characters such as Cecil react in ways such as "He must be wicked, this man" (Fink and Cranor 190). Another instance where Kevin's smile is seen as deviant is towards the climax of the series where he smiles and in reaction Cecil says "You monster" and Steve Carlsberg says "That was really gross . . ." (Fink and Cranor 262). In other instances we see deviance as a norm violation when looking at Steve Carlsberg in episode 53: September Monologues.
I find the Stolen Generation video and article to be sad. Like one of the key speakers in the video mentioned, as kids they did not know what was going on. They had people telling them what to say and think. They were their slaves. To conclude, the Socs unarguably epitomize disgrace, menace, and contempt on numerous occasions, giving way to their bogus temperaments. The level of ill-manner is exponentially greater among the Socs, as opposed to that of the Greasers: one of three primary reasons that explains why Socs are more of a disgrace to society. The Socs and Greasers alike ultimately draw comparisons to being two varying cultures, each with unique beliefs and moral ethics, possessing over-lapping similarities and conflicting traits. Society’s mannerism of viewing its fellow citizens displays the conspicuous bias that persists, in favor of the Socs. Looking at the big picture, two opposing backgrounds, the Socs and Greasers, most certainly diverge to a great degree, in lieu of the abundant similarities shared between both.
In a satirical music video titled “Welcome to Hell,” the female members of the Saturday Night Live cast welcomed men to the world of sexism. Saturday Night Live is produced in New York City, with the actors doubling as writers for each script, including this video. The video was inspired by the recent sexual harassment allegations in Hollywood, starting with Harvey Weinstein. The video brought to light that although the accusations are new, sexual harassment is not. Throughout the video, the women portray multiple historical instances of sexism, such as the Salem Witch Trials and Rosie the Riveter.
Freedom Riders The purpose for the creation of the Freedom Riders was to have a nonviolent protest against racial discrimination. In an attempt to violate segregation laws in the south, the Freedom Riders were a mix of Blacks and Whites who, together, rode in small busses all the way from Washington D.C. to New Orleans. The Riders were hoping to get the movement into the deep south and wanted to start a national movement. Not only did the Riders have to be trained on what to do when violently attacked, they also had to prepare mentally for all the hateful comments and chants that they would receive.
An example of the first type of violence, character to character, can be seen in the film Gridiron Gang. In the film, Roger, a member of the 88’s gang is hit by a car, driven by members of the 95’s gang. Since Roger was a part of the 95’s rival gang, he was targeted and killed. Because of Roger’s death, his best friend, Willie was angry and went home with a gun, which he eventually used to shoot his mother’s abusive boyfriend. As a result, Willie is sent to a detention center, which is where the base of the movie begins.
The film Bicycle Thieves (1949) directed by Vittorio De Sica, is an Italian Neo-Realistic film set in post-war Italy. The film follows Antonio Ricci and his son Bruno on a quest to retrieve his stolen bike in an attempt to remove himself and his family from the cycle of poverty. Bicycle Thieves (1949) discusses themes of struggle and desperation causing one to sacrifice their morality and become the evil they initially fought. De Sica expresses such themes to the viewer through the culture of poverty and the continuous pain that poverty is capable of inflicting. De Sica also employs simplistic narrative, dramatic sound, and mise-en-scene that highlights the depressing nature of poverty.
Select me for this scholarship because I am an ambitious leader and innovator. For building new skills and sharpening my current ones, I need further education. To focus on my studies and become valuable to humanity is a priority, and incessant worry about my financial situation would be a huge distraction to that goal. Functionalists, conflict theorist, and interactionist all have different views and focus on different parts of society and its people. What is deviance? Deviance is a behavior, trait, or belief that departs from a norm and generates a negative reaction in a particular group (Ferris and Stein 151). It is considered a social construct.
