Despite people being divided in countless ways, making us individualized beings, we continue to have one sure component in common: loneliness. Aldous Huxley may not have written A Brave New World with the sole intent of exposing us to how true loneliness may be, but it was definitely apparent. Relations among each other is squelched when those unlike the norm are cast aside. As well as when there is a lack of connected relationships and an inability to deal with issues. “A gramme is better than a damn” (Huxley 116), is a common mantra used by the citizens when anything is but perfect. These catchy phrases are a coping mechanism to make light of dire circumstances. No one is capable of dealing with upsetting situations or their problems, so they turn to Soma and bury them. “Oh, I wish I had my soma!” (Huxley 116). Instead of Lenina turning to Bernard when distressed, she immediately thinks she needs her soma. Even John, crushed under peer pressure, took part in soma.. With multiple different routes of communication, face-to-face interaction has become archaic and it will continue to worsen. “The share of 18-24-year-olds who use online dating has roughly tripled from 10% in 2013 to 27% today” (5 Facts About Online Dating). Because actual relationships and customs have gone somewhat out of style, the relationships formed between people are shallow and have little meaning, leading to more loneliness. Not only are relationships through social media of poorer quality, they are far and few between.
