This book is written from a very personal standpoint, stemming from her real-life experiences on a topic that changed her life forever. Considering her emotional ties to the subject, she is very resourceful in detailing how she felt during each step of recovery. A corresponding source that demonstrates credibility in a different way is the PBS documentary "Dying to be Thin" directed by Larkin McPhee. This documentary not only presents interviews from people that have overcome eating disorders, but various expert opinions from doctors to further support that it is a matter of grave concern. Because it is supported with a mountain of facts and statistics on top of the collection of personal stories, this documentary is slightly more successful in encapsulating eating disorders and establishing credibility.
The severity and grave nature of eating disorders make the disorders’ epidemiology an important topic of study. I believe turning points for therapeutic treatments can be made when the nature, role, and undertakings of the disease are understood. This was seen in the film as the patients went through intensive therapeutic treatment and aftercare. Although some patients recovered, this is not the case for most patients as Anorexia Nervosa is a leading cause of death. Although research has made great strides in treatment, I believe we have more to uncover in terms of efficacious treatment.
The article also talks about the treatments for these three eating disorders. These being general monitoring, therapy to learn how to break these eating habits, and antidepressants. Next it talks about the biological basis for eating disorders. These being, genetics and “abnormalities in the brain’s serotonergic and dopaminergic systems.” This article is very heavy on ethos being written from such a notable medical institution.
There are many different opinions regarding eating disorders whether they are genetic, ethnic, cultural problems, or a culturally reactive problem. Stereotypes from the past believe that white middle class adolescents have the most related problems to eating disorders because of their anglo-saxon cultural backgrounds. Research has shown that imagery of the ideal Western body has had a chain reaction of body shape and eating habit conflict between all ethnicities, cultures, and sexes. The issue between the two viewpoints is whether the problems associated with eating disorders is cultural or culturally reactive.

Background: Eating disorders are a misconstrued problem. Many think that eating disorders develop from social media or just bad eating habits. While that may be true, it is important to take into account that there are several other factors. A major factor in the cause of eating disorders is mental health. When a person has bad mental health This results in a person's brain sending signals to their body, causing distorted body image and unhealthy eating habits.
In the words of the famous French philosopher, Rene Descartes, “It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well.” This quote rings true for me, as it does for many others. I decided to double major in philosophy, because my time here at Oklahoma State illustrated how important it is to not only to study various subjects, but to employ this knowledge through critical thought and logical reason to all aspects of my life. My study of philosophy, at Oklahoma State, allows me to better assess the beliefs I hold, in light of a variety of perspectives from modern and classic philosophy.
They often have an intense fear of fat and gaining weight and often have distorted views of their own body image (Shapiro 2). Thus, they resort to severe food restriction, periods of fasting and even various purging methods for weight loss (Grilo 5). On the other hand, Bulimic patients often binge-eat and then looking for methods to get rid of the food due to guilt by various purging methods (i.e., self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives or diuretics and excessive exercise) (Grilo 5). Although many say that the media causes eating disorders, studies have shown that the media is not the main cause of eating disorders. The media does have a part to play in causing the rise in eating disorders in today’s society.
My long-term career goals are to earn a Masters degree in Public Policy and go to law school where I will then become a public interest lawyer, helping my community positively on a local level. Using my background in public policy, I then plan on pursuing a career in policy making so I can gain a platform to address the issues surrounding race and education on a more meaningful level. Within my careers, I am committed to fight to make our society a more just place and have a positive impact in my community, especially for people of color. One of the ways I want to do this is by creating a program that helps redesign the educational experience of young people of color to effectively educate them and prepare them for higher education and beyond. Some of my goals have influenced others, but they are all interconnected because they revolve around my passion for education and public service, which stem from my upbringing in my community.
