Progressivism Essay Can one imagine a place where children are working in minefields and are not even given good pay? That was exactly what happened before the Progressive Movement took place. The experience of workers led to the Progressive Movement in Industrial America because of long hours but low wages, dangerous working conditions and child labor, and unsanitary conditions. To begin with, the experience that led workers to the Progressive Movement in Industrial America was because of the long working hours but the low wages they were given. For instance, in Document 3, the author states that the day’s work was supposed to end at six in the afternoon, but “they worked overtime” and “did not get additional pay for overtime”.
Christopher McCandless, whose life and journey are the main ideas of the novel “Into the Wild”, was about an adolescent who, upon graduating from Emory College, decided to journey off into the Alaskan wilderness. He had given away his savings of $25,000 and changed his name to Alex Supertramp. His voyage to Alaska took him two years during which he traveled all across the country doing anomalous jobs and making friends. He inevitably made it to Alaska were he entered the wilderness with little more than a few books, a sleeping bag and a ten pound bag of rice. A couple months after his first day in the wild, his body was found in an abandoned bus.

In this unit, my classmates and I read Into the Wild and discussed on the few reasons why Chris McCandless may have gone to Alaska. I have developed an understanding on why he may have gone into the wild and I believe that the reason is because of his family situation. McCandless never had a trustworthy family and with his father hiding secrets behind their back made the situation worse. Going into the wild was his only escape from the disgrace of the world. Despite his reference to Tolstoy, Emerson, Thoreau, and London, it is only reasonable to believe that the actions he took for going into the wild was because of his personal life with his family issues.
