Romeo and Juliet is a play written by Shakespeare. The story is a romance about two young lovers. The play concludes with the death of both Romeo and Juliet. In this tragedy, Lord Capulet plays a significant role in the plot line. Lord Capulet is the head of the Capulet family and is a goal-driven character. He disregards morals because he believes the ends justify the means. His goal-driven nature is shown when he chooses to intimidate Juliet into getting married despite previously feeling like it was morally wrong. This leaves viewers with a sense of bitterness when his actions contribute to the death of Romeo and Juliet, contributing to the feeling of catharsis in the audience. He does this by playing a part in the death of Romeo and Juliet. Lord Capulet contributed to the death of Romeo and Juliet because he is the reason that Juliet decides to fake her death. After Lord Capulet tells Juliet that she must marry Paris, She goes to friar Lawrence. She tells him that she’d rather kill herself than marry Paris, So friar Lawrence comes up with a plan for her to fake her death. In act 4, scene 1, He tells her ”Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distilled liquor drink thou off, When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humor, for no pulse Shall keep his native progress, but surcease,”. Juliet faking her death is what causes the chain reaction that leads to the death of both Romeo and Juliet. If Lord Capulet hadn’t forced Juliet to marry Paris, She never would have felt it was necessary to fake her death, and then maybe the tragedy of the play could have been avoided. This contributes to the feeling of catharsis caused by the play because Lord Capulet’s actions cause the viewer to feel upset and bitter. The viewer can see how if Lord Capulet had chosen a different course of action, the characters they were emotionally invested in may not have
