When it came time to choose a Chief for the island, Jack believed there was no competition for leader of the tribe. Ralph believed in rules, his overall goal was to have the boys create a society similar to the one they had known before they crashed onto the island. He was constantly trying to get the boys to build shelter, gather food, and perform other jobs necessary for their survival. Every day Ralph was commanding the boys to keep the fire going. In Ralphs eyes this was the only way they were going to be rescued.
Ralph had everyone doing tasks, to keep the production going. Jack kept refusing to do anything Ralph would say, he’d always disagree, even when he knew he was wrong. Jack only wanted to hunt and kill things, even if it was his own peers, that’s what he loved to do, and he wouldn’t stop. Jack and the savages became very untrustworthy, and unpredictable, they were dangerous. Ralph tried getting the hunters to come back into his clan, so Jack would be on his own, but they always did what Jack said, even if they knew it was wrong.
“We saw-” “-the beast-”. In the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there were a group of English Schoolboys. They roamed around on a deserted island, a war was going on in the near future. There are many possible things a “beast” can be. The definition of a “beast” evolves throughout the story.
Prathik Kurella Ms.Thomas H Eng 2 9/25/22 “Law and Order” in Lord of the Flies “We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything. ”(Golding).
the injustice and cruelty that runs rampant in the world, it is unsurprising to become determined to make things better for tomorrow. A moral grey area is the only thing separating those making positive changes and playing judge, jury, and executioner. Commendable yet unreasonable, leaders’ whose sole purpose in life is to fix what they see as wrong with the world fall prey to thinking there is only ally or enemy. They harm those they are trying to liberate in the long run. This is the downfall of leaders in many works of literature, including Harrison Bergeron and The Lord of the Flies.
When Jack disagreed with Ralph, he seceded and formed his own tribe; where they hoped to hunt and have fun. The following quote describes how he felt
However, differences arise when Jack goes off hunting while Ralph is struggling to build shelters with Simon (Golding, 50). This is the first instance of Jack letting his personal goals get in the way of doing something for the benefit of the group, something Ralph is focused on because it ultimately leads to survival. These differences grow as Jack immerses himself in hunting completely and Ralph advocates for the importance of the signal fire. We see this explode in Ralph when a steamship passes by, but Jack and his hunters let the signal fire go out because they were too busy hunting. Ralph exclaims, “‘There was a ship.
Four Eyes “This is an island. At least I think it’s an island. That’s a reef out in the sea. Perhaps there are not any grownups anywhere” (Golding 2).
The first argument we are able to present is how child soldiers are being used to fight wars for rebel groups or the government of third world countries. The first example of this being shown in the text is when the article called “Armed & Underage” by Jeffrey Gettleman we can see this example when he tells us “According to human-rights groups and the United Nations, the Somali government is using hundreds of children, some as young as 9, on the front lines.” This piece of evidence is able to tell us how the Somali government is using children as soldiers on the front lines. Also the article states as young as 9 to fight in wars for them against rebel groups. In fact, we can clearly see how kids are being used as child soldiers as we can clearly tell, but it does show us the age group the kids are being picked up from but also what the government uses these kids to fight wars.

The book The Lord Of The Flies is a book when kids are stranded on a undiscovered island and have to make their own society. It eventually turns south as the kids disagree and start to turn from civilized to savage. In this book there are many reasons why it was challenged and why it could be possibly banned. Some of these include strong language and violent scenes not appropriate for young readers. Overall I believe that this book should be held back from young readers but not banned.
Many wonder what is the root of all evil and most conclude people are innately evil or have a darkness in them waiting to reveal itself. The topic of evil and where it really comes from has caused a debate among many people who take a variety of stances. One such person, William Golding, writes a novel called Lord of the Flies to display his position on this topic. Through his character’s in Lord of the Flies, Golding conveys his opinion that humans are born with natural ill intent which will manifest from lack of society, however, evidence showing people are born with a moral compass, along with the constant appearance of heroes in society, prove people are not inherently evil.
Throughout years, there are thousands of novels published each year. Especially with older novels, not all stories are able to stay relevant as the times are changing. As some novels get older, it becomes harder for them to relate the themes to the present. For some readers, this makes it hard to understand the novel and to pick up the themes portrayed in the book. Written in the 1950s, many would believe that the novel wouldn’t applicable to our society.
Ralph was chosen by the boys to be the chief of the tribe and believed they need many things to survive including, a signal fire, huts, and food. But, most of all civilization. The boys needed to stay civilized so that they could have order and having order would help them survive. Jack on the other hand didn't want to go home and he enjoyed having freedom to do whatever he wanted without any adults around a little too much. He believed that what they should really be focusing on is hunting.
