The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a tale with action and mystery littered throughout. It can be taken many ways including an adventure story, a description of man’s nature, or an allegory. Whichever way you look at it The Lord of the Flies is a feat in literature considering it can be looked at in multiple ways. In Lord of the Flies many British school boys crashland on an island with no connection to anyone besides themselves and no adults to help them through their problem. At first they establish some ground rules like the conch and who’s going to be chief. These boys were possibly being flown out of london because of some World War, and a storm hits them causing the crash. After setting some rules they attempt to build a society but this fails along with creating shelter. Some elements of an adventure story include a clear good and evil, a huge battle or many tiny ones, fight for survival etc. In Lord of the flies it says, “‘Three of us-if we take more we’d get all mixed, and lose each other-three of us will go on an expedition and find out.” (Golding p. ). Thus, when Golding names them explorers who go on expeditions it becomes an adventure story because in those particular novels (Treasure Island, Coral Island, and Hardy boys) they are considered adventurers. But along with having similarities it also has its differences from these stereotypical “adventure stories.” Some of these non-adventure story elements include children killing children, major characters dying, and gore.
