William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, is a classic novel about a group of schoolboys stuck on an island where fear and savagery consumes them. From the beginning of the book to the last page fear has a prominent role in the novel. Fear in the book manifests itself with many thoughts including what the littluns refer to as the beast, and the fear of not getting home. Fear leads some of the boys to make regrettable decision and it also leads Jack to a position of power. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding fear dominates the island that the boys are stranded on and this fear leads the boys to positions of power and influences some of the boys to make regrettable decisions.
People are overly ambitious in wanting to take power from the person who has the most of it. The boys make a sort of government and elect a leader, they create rules and have fun. This was in the beginning though over time the boys start to become more savage and brutal they start to lose their once civilized nature and end up killing some of the other boys. In my opinion, this quote means to overcome your fears because they can do the most damage to your life. I can connect to this quote because I used to be afraid of heights. I knew that if I did not overcome my severe phobia that this could hinder my life. I may never live my life without being scared when I go on an airplane, climb a latter, or be sitting on the top of a tree. Knowing that this fear can hold me back my whole life, I attempted to conquer the fear and I succeed.
In Lord of the Flies, the only one who truly learns and discovers the truth about fear is Simon. On the island the group of boys discover that there may be a beastie. With this thought in their head, some of the boys like Jack have this insane thought of hunting it down. This thought later drives the group of boys to become obsessed about the beast. Simon knew the truth; “maybe there is a beast…what I mean is maybe it’s only us”(Golding 89).
