Lord of the Flies is a novel written by William Golding about a group of boys who get stranded on an island with no adults. Throughout the book, they are presented with challenges such as wild beasts, leadership, and most importantly each other. There are many different lessons to be learned but the most important is how Golding uses a young boy, Roger, and the pig to develop how when left to their own devices a human’s true nature takes over throughout the book. In the first chapter, Jack and the other boys want to kill a pig to eat it. After tracking one down, they find a pig but in the end, Jack ends up letting it go. Jack talks about how he will kill the next one that comes around. “Next time there would be no mercy” (31). The reason the pig was not killed was because they were afraid of the consequences, the fact that they would have killed a living being. Later in the book after their first kill, Jack is boasting: “‘I cut the pig's throat,’ said Jack, proudly, and yet twitched as he said it” (69). Jack is still scared and fearful of the consequences. He twitches at the thought of him killing a living creature but has faced his fear. With the death of the first pig comes more people overcoming their fear of punishment as they realize that they will not be punished. All the boys start acting in their true nature. Roger throws stones at little kids, Jack starts trying to take control, and the twins begin to distance themselves from each other. By the time they completely overcome their fear of killing, the island has descended into the chaos of true nature. When they stick the pig’s head on the stick they are fearless. No longer afraid of the beast, they believe they can take on anything including each other, and they end up killing two of their own because they have no fear of the consequences of their
