The Rewritten Cold War How does power and authority affect how the way people behave and think towards themselves and/or others??? In Lord of the Flies, several boys have crashed on an island without any adults. Everyone wants to have the leader role and be dominant with the power. Lord of the Flies has transcended the Cold War making it still relevant readers today. The want for power can bring out the savagery in a man even though the power does not need to be needed. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding put many symbols in the book to represent something deeper and that connects to the real world. One of the main symbols is fire. Another symbol is the island. The island is a home to the boys. The boys have had to adjust to their new surroundings since they knew that they couldn’t get off the island in a matter of seconds. One thing that didn’t help was that the island was an inhabitant area and was seen as the Unknown. Next, there is Ralph, one of the main characters. Ralph was seen as the leader of everybody. He usually always had the conch so he was the only who could speak. To us, that would seem like a president or a dictator. FInally, the last symbol is Simon. SImon is the good samaritan on the island. He is the only one on the island who sees all the bad things that the so-called “leaders” are doing. In chapter 9, it says, “Simon saw a humped thing suddenly sit up on the top and look down at him. He hid his face, and toiled on. The flies had found the figure too. The life-like movement would scare them off for a moment so that they made a dark cloud round the head. Then as the blue material of the parachute collapsed the corpulent figure would bow forward, sighing, and the flies settle once more. Simon felt his knees smack the rock.
