The United Kingdom triggered its panic mode during the nineteenth century. During this time, a revolution was in rapid progression. People during this period of time were prone to success by risking rather than embracing safety. The most renowned figure during this time and even today is Alfred Tennyson, better known as Lord Tennyson. Tennyson wrote an abundance of classics including, Ulysses, In Memoriam, The Lady of Shalott, and many more. Tennyson was born in Somersby, the United Kingdom in 1809. He was born into a large family household with 13 members. As a young boy, Tennyson's life was not always easy. His father's decent income was not enough to support his enormous family size. As a result, Tennyson received his pre-university education from his own well-read father. Tennyson's personal life and his works through poetry reflect the dominance of risk being more valuable to creativity rather than safety. When the Lady has been trapped inside the tower for years, one can comprehend how much safety is being valued. Despite years of being trapped for years, in the end, it was her desire to get out of the place by risking her own life. In the poem, Ulysses, the character points out the unnecessariness of safety. In the poem, it says, “I cannot rest from travel: I will drink life to the lees”(Tennyson). This tells us how sitting around doling out rewards and punishments bores Ulysses. He wants to be out there taking risks and fight like he is supposed to be doing. It also says, “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield”(Tennyson). Ulysses is informing the readers how they are strong because of their will to strive. This shows their desire to take risks even at old age.
