Lord Voldemort, He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, or the Dark Lord. Different titles that instill fear to the hearts of wizards and witches alike. Behind of all these monikers is a man who desired for power and superiority to hide his insecurity towards his origin as an orphan. Tom Marvolo Riddle was connected to both the House of Gaunt and the House of Slytherin. He was the last descendant of Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of Hogwarts School of Wizardry and his ability to use parseltongue—ability to communicate/ understand snakes—was a proof of his lineage. His mother Merope was the last of the House of Gaunt, an ancient and formerly wealthy Wizarding family that was noted for producing individuals with violent and unstable personalities due to generations of inbreeding. On the other hand, his father, Tom Riddle Sr. was a wealthy muggle (non-magical) that was seduced by Merope Gaunt through the use of a love potion. His mother died right after his birth and his father left his mother after the effect of the love potion wore off and as a result, he was sent to an orphanage. …show more content…

He was the top student during his stay at Hogwarts and he was able to charm anybody that he encountered. He was also physically attractive, inheriting his looks from his muggle father. Using his likeable and charismatic facade, he was able to hide his goals to attain immortality and eradicate all those against him even Dumbledore, a man considered to be the greatest wizard of his time. His interests were narrowly focused on the usefulness of people, objects, and power to his goals. As a result, he treated everybody as pawns that can be easily discarded and replaced. He was obsessed in gaining power and clearing half-bloods and muggle-born alike through his pure-blood supremacist ideals.
