Since cavemen discovered that a sharpened stone could be used to scratch drawings onto cave walls, men and women have drawn us. We are the combinations of lines and pictures that humanity has chosen over the centuries as guides for fellow tribesmen. We are the finder of lost paths; we contain the combined knowledge of adventurers and travelers alike. Since the first human set off to discover the unknown, they have used us to help the people they left behind find their way. At the beginning of our art form, we may have guided local cave dwellers to the location of water. From the beginning of Mesopotamia until centuries later, we led city dwellers from their homes made of brick to such mundane locales as the local temple or market. As soon as she mentioned her trip to Paris, I knew it would be the perfect gift. Using guidebooks of Paris as a reference, along with details of trips offered by our co-workers, I painstakingly drew a map that contained every shop and museum that a first-time traveler would want to visit. The shops and museums were numbered, and a guide was included on the side so she could check off each attraction after she visited it. Lorelei and I have worked in the same department for a few years. On her first day, I walked up to a malfunctioning copier to introduce myself just as she yelled “PERCUSSION MAINTENANCE!” and karate-chopped the side of it. I’ll never forget the look of pure mortification on her face as the side of the copier de-attached itself and fell to the floor with a thud.
