Racism is prevalent in every society; It’s found in small communities and entire nations. It’s an ongoing struggle everywhere to derail it. As people have seen over the years, there are ways to lessen prejudice and unite two diverse groups. An example would be the power of sports. However, in order for sports to have a long lasting effect on racial harmony, it requires an effective leader to implement permanent changes.

When he was first elected, South Africa was on the verge of a Civil War and there was much controversy between organizations like ANC, the African National Congress, and the IFP, the Inkatha Freedom Party. While all of this was occurring, South Africa had been admitted to the RWC, Rugby World Cup, and was chosen to host all the games in their country. This was the first time in the history of RWC that one country hosted all of the games. With the pressure from preparations bearing in and the steady conflicts regarding race, Mandela needed to react. By putting all his attention behind the Springboks, he appointed the newly desegregated rugby team as his peace ambassadors. Fast forward to June 24, 1995, the day of the of the Championship match between the South African Springboks and the New Zealand All Blacks. There had been some suspicion of people targeting Mandela, but that did not interfere with his intentions of the day. The stands were filled with the majority of the white population. The black citizens were found at home watching the game on television. Mandela already had the support of the white population from the moment he showed up wearing his Springboks t-shirt and cap.
