On July 1st 1863, the Confederate army butted heads with the Union army in one of the most horrific battles of the American Civil War. The book The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara explained the disaster that was called the Battle of Gettysburg. This historical fiction novel took place at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and occurred from July 1st to July 3rd in 1863. The novel discussed how the actions of General Robert E. Lee, General James Longstreet, Colonel Chamberlain and many more men affected the course of events throughout those three long and hot summer days. Michael Shaara truly captured the pressure and stress that follows along with being in charge.
In the nonfiction novel, Always Running, Luis Rodriguez elaborates on his personal life experience in L.A. gangs. Always Running contains atrocious detail and powerful, poetic, passages, that leave each reader impacted and potentially speechless. Rodriguez’s work is not only literary, but takes a stand to political issues that continue to be faced in today’s society. Luis was not given easy paths even as a young boy. This novel goes into explaining the shootings, jail time, suicides, addiction of hard drugs, discrimination, and the constant deaths, in which Luis has to experience almost daily.
Growing up in San Diego was fun. The beach was near my high school and it was the ultimate after school hangout. At the beach, you could enjoy the best homemade ice cream at Mootime Creamery. When my friends were hungry, we would head out to the closest taco shop. My favorite dishes are rolled and fish tacos.
Through all the disturbance, brights lights, and traffic, a bus drove past and stopped. She looks at it and seems to have recognized those numbers before. She quickly scrambles in her purse and reaches for the receipt that she was given at the airport. It seemed to have been the same exact number that appeared on the bus. The doors of the bus creaked open and the bus driver motioned for her to go onto the bus.
“The winning home run”. It was a Friday night at Dodger stadium a really cold night at that time i was only 11 years old in the year 2011. My Dad and I went to watch our favorite baseball team the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was the Dodgers vs the Calorado Rockies the Dodgers were going for thier second straight sweep so my Dad and I knew the stadium was going to be full of screaming,loud and mad fans. As my Dad and I arrived we were getting out the car when we see the giant lines of Dodger fans trying to get into the stadium just to try to get a ball from batting practice from the Dodgers .
Ever since the railroad expansion came to the Southwest, it gave easy access to many people, including attraction of new businesses. Santa Fe came in 1877, and turn northeastern part of New Mexico in a modern paradise, by attracting settlers, miners and ranchers (Lamar, 153). By 1880, Santa Fe joined Southern Pacific railroad, therefore several towns and property values went up. The cattle business expanded dramatically and more than fifty charter banks went up ever since the Santa Fe railroad was built (Lamar, 154). The Sonoran railroad completed in 1882, paved the way for new beginning for southern Arizona, due to mostly being isolated from other states.
I live in Garden Grove, Vietnam. I know Garden Grove is not in Vietnam, but it feels immensely so. My community is small, we know and see all, but we are not tight knit or family like. There are Vietnamese people everywhere I go and look. If a person who was not Vietnamese, of Asian descent, or Mexican in my community, they would stand out like a sore thumb.
I have lived in East Oakland my whole life. To the majority of people, the mention of East Oakland evokes thoughts of violence, shootings, and gangs. I was one of the people who believed in these stereotypes, and for a particularly long time. I was one of the people who saw Oakland as a wasteland, a place with nothing to offer me, and a place I had nothing to offer to.

Joan Didion’s “Los Angeles Notebook” is an essay that highlights the deeply mechanistic view of human behavior by using images that are both enticing, yet horrifying at the same time. Her audience is broader than the people of Los Angles, who she discusses in articulate detail. Being that her audience is generally aimed at people who are concerned about humanity and the way people operate together in certain scenarios. There is an eerie sense to this piece, as the subject is the hot winds known as foehn by scientists, but otherwise known as a “Santa Ana” by the people of the region. Didion claims that, in the simplest terms, “to live with the Santa Ana is to accept, consciously or unconsciously, a deeply mechanistic view of human behavior,”
Government Regulations on Food Food contamination, the presence of harmful chemicals and microorganisms in food, continues to become a pressing problem in the United States. According to Baher Kamal, “contaminated food affects one in ten people around the world- or around 700 million people as a result” (1). Although, the number of people being affected by food contamination is rising, government regulations are loosely enforced. Government agencies such as the Food Safety and Inspection Service, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention attribute most of the blame to lack of funding. These agencies are not enforcing their regulations, and because of this, the recall process of contaminated food continues to be voluntary.
I swiftly changed my clothes so that I didn’t catch a cold and I sat down on the couch, pulling my homework out from my bookbag. Math equations filled my head but I still couldn’t concentrate.
