Performance Report Louis Armstrong

For this performance report I chose Louis Armstrong not only for his influential jazz songs but for the type of person he was when he was alive. Louis Armstrong is well known for his song “What a Wonderful World” and he is known for bringing soloist art into the ensemble nature of jazz. In the Harlem Renaissance period of jazz he was known for being a massive impact on changing jazz to creating new techniques jazz artists will soon use that would imitate instrumental solos. I chose to do multiple of his performances to aid in this paper. The first song I decided on writing about is “What a Wonderful World”. In this song, the vocals are slow and paced with the beat. The vocals are also low and controlled with the pitch of his vocals. The instruments in this song I hear are strings, possibly violin and cello, a couple of horns, possibly a tuba, maybe a flute at some points. I believe that in this song it would be prime to emphasize the word dolly maybe not exactly every time he sings it but maybe the majority of the time.I also feel hello dolly could have more swing in the tone of his voice. Other than those possible changes the tone and pace of this song was well balanced and the pace was a moderate pace. In the song I hear the piano the majority of the time with an AABBCCDD style of playing; the chords seem to be the same ones repeated. The cymbals I can hear lightly in the background are maintaining a rhythm and a beat. I also heard a possible horn and a trumpet or saxophone. I believe that there should have been more brass instruments involved. I could imagine it being more focused on the brass; it would work better than just the
