Approximately 100,000 children die of cancer before the age of 15 in the world every day. According to the Journal of American Medical Association, roughly 80% of children with cancer in high-income countries, such as the United States, survive. With that in mind, we must be thankful for the facilities we have close to home, such as Children’s Mercy Hospital.

Maternity In Love Medicine In the novel “Love Medicine” by Louise Erdrich the mothers seem to defy history and control their families and their lives, the mothers seem to have most influence on the people around them. The mothers in “Love Medicine” are strong tough women, who suffer through seemingly unbearable pain throughout their lives which seems to influence them for the rest of their lives. One of the strongest characters in the novel “Love Medicine” is Marie Lazarre/Kashpaw who comes from a family of thieves, but heads her family with a no nonsense attitude that she has carried with her since early life.
Ludacris, a famous male singer released a song featuring Mary J. Blige in 2007 called “Runaway Love.” This song speaks for itself and Ludacris does an excellent job of portraying his message about various struggles that some people are faced with in life. Runaway Love reperents the struggle of life through hip-hop and rap music. The song portrays a story of little girls who are for instance “stuck up in a world of their own.” The people around them strictly don’t care about them, which leads them having to own up and care for themselves.
Laborer’s Love (1922), a silent film made by Chinese cinema pioneers Zhang Shichuan and Zheng Zhengqiu, is said to be “the earliest complete extant Chinese film” (Zhang, 90). Despite the film’s numerous similarities to Harold Lloyd 's Never Weaken (1921), Zhang Zhen argues in her writing that Laborer’s Love was ultimately a product of the “nascent…urban culture” and “confluence of discourses and practices of shadow-play” in Shanghai during the 1910s-1920s (100). Zhang Yingjin reiterates this notion, highlighting that since it “was a transitional moment in Chinese films, the producers threw in pieces grabbed from various sources”, resulting in “a mixture of disparate, sometimes contradictory elements” within Laborer’s Love (25). One of the most-awaited moments of the year is right here once again. Dim neighborhoods are brightened by ghastly smiles of Jack-o '-lanterns in communities where the breeze is also slowly getting colder and the leaves that have fallen off of pines give each step a crunch. In a few days, children dressed like pirates, princesses, ghouls, and little monsters will be knocking on doors requesting goodies and several other goodies. Yet just before Halloween begins, you can delight the kids in your community by teaming up with several moms and dads and arranging a Halloween scavenger quest.
While we have accomplished many things to help our clients, there is still more we can do. December 1st is #GivingTuesday, a global campaign bringing people across the world together on a single day to take action in support of those in need in their communities. It is and opportunity to help those less fortunate.
Note: This project includes many components that will be completed through multiple lessons; therefore, not all of the above
Do we really love what we do? In the article “In the Name of Love,” Miya Tokumitsu covers the issue that doing what you love (DWYL) gives false hope to the working class. Tokumitsu reviews how those who are given jobs ultimately cannot truly love what they do because of the employers who make jobs possible. These same employers keep their employees overlooked.
Christmas plays a huge role in every kid’s childhood, but not every kid is fortunate enough to have one. No matter what situation my family has been in I was always fortunate to wake up Christmas morning to gift under the tree, but now I understand that Christmas is not about what you get, but about what you are able to give back. To play a part in something as beautiful as in helping a kid have a better childhood really touched my heart and helped me see past the material things in life. Often people take for granted that they have gifts under the tree, or the luxury of having an iPhone, or nice clothes, but never stop to realize that there are people in the same community that don’t even have the luxury of waking up to a hot meal or clean clothes to wear. I can see, that a small personal gift under the tree can bring joy to a kid’s life, but it is also much more.
