William Russell English 9 2/28/17 A Midsummer Night’s Dream Essay (Final Draft) For centuries, literary works have relied on love to establish engaging subplots and presidential character motivations; however, different authors have interpreted this complex emotion with varying degrees of success. In the play A Midsummer Night's Dream, love is depicted differently depending on the relational status of the characters and the situations in which they are involved in. In the beginning of the play, Shakespeare establishes the indecisive and conflicted relationship that has formed between Theseus and Hippolyta.
The quote from Sigmund Freud, “One is very crazy when in love.” is very relateable to Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. Love is the dominant theme of the play. With the major conflicts surrounding the topic of love. Shakespeare demonstrates two major types of love.
For this week, we focused on an article entitled, “A Defense of Abortion,” by Judith Thomson. The article covered the topic of abortion and used an interesting analogy to help put a picture to the views and opinion of abortion that the Author has. Thomson’s analogy painted a picture of someone in good health being bed ridden for nine months because they were selected against their will to help keep a famous violinist alive. The scenario painted by the author says that you (the person bedridden) is the only person that is able to keep this violinist alive, while still being unconscious, but still alive. People say you only fall in love once; however, what if you have no choice but to fall in love a second time? One might have extreme feelings for one person, but the next minute they could have feelings for another person. Love can be portrayed as a bully that victimises those who fall for its games. In Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, love is expressed as a bully and targets the people of Athens and those within a magical fairyland. Although, the characters have good intentions, many things go wrong.
THESIS STATEMENT In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare modeled the relationships between Hermia and Egeus, Titania and Oberon, and Theseus and Hippolyta after the Elizabethan hierarchy, yet challenged the traditional gender roles through his dominant female characters. PURPOSE STATEMENT Through critical analysis, historical reference, and literary interpretation, a comparative study between the Elizabethan era and A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be presented to express Shakespeare’s literary objection to the tradition male hierarchy.

Love in Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare’s iconic play, Romeo and Juliet , was published in 1597 and considered one the most substantial works of English literature. The play is about two star-crossed lovers in Verona who cannot escape from their unfortunate fate. Romeo and Juliet’s passionate love for each other dominates the play which makes it a romantic story. However, their love cannot be enough for them to be together. Romeo being a Montague and Juliet being a Capulet is the greatest obstacle for them.
As the story between the lovers progress their love blossoms and becomes part of them "If in thy wisdom, thou canst give no help, do thou but call my resolution wise, and with this knife I’ll help it presently” (IV.i.53-55). As Juliet says this to the Friar, she feels as though it’s the only solution without Romeo because he makes it worth her while to wake up every day, which conveys Shakespeare’s true feelings about love as in other ways this can be seen as though without each other they aren’t whole. Shakespeare’s subtle hints of positive love is revealed in numerous areas of the story, even if it’s through sadistic ways "Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here’s drink. I drink to thee."
The Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy that revolves around the death of two young lovers as a result of a family feud between the Montagues and the capulets. The statement ‘Unbridled passion is to blame for the deaths of the young lovers’ is authentic until it reaches a midpoint from where further, the statement is not accurate. This is because Romeo’s Petrarchan love and Juliet’s parent pressure play a critical role to forming an uncontrollable sentimental love connection between Romeo and Juliet which later on in the play lead to them committing suicide for each other. The play rotates around different forms of love, two of them being friendship love (Phileo) and romantic (Eros) or true love. Love is the most important theme of the play and the asymmetrical love seen in the play between the four Athenians and romantic encounters cause conflict within the play. There is a strong friendship love between two characters, Hermia and Helena. However, their friendship love is tested throughout the play by their pursuit of true love which, in the end, ultimately prevails.
