After reading about each circle of hell and seeing why each sinner deserves the punishment they have been given I have decided that Lucifer’s is the most contrapasso. Contrapasso is when a sinner is given a punishment that is fitting to the sins they committed in life. Lucifer also know as Satan, has the most contrapasso punishment for many reasons. He is known as one of the most evil souls in hell. Of course he wasn’t always like this. At one time Lucifer was a beautiful, powerful, and one of god’s favorite angles. This all changed when Lucifer challenged god for more power and rebelled against God or Jesus. In hell, now Lucifer is trapped in frozen ice. However, what Lucifer does not know is that he is trapping himself. As described by …show more content…
I explained before that he was once beautiful. Take Dante’s words on it, “If he was once as handsome as he now is ugly,” (34, 34-35). Now Lucifer has not one but three frightening and ugly faces. This reminds about how people talk about having beauty on the inside and out. When Lucifer was a good and kind soul he looked beautiful on the outside. Once he became evil and rebelled he was punished to look like his soul; frightening and ugly. Outside, of being trapped and having terrible looks Lucifer is forever gnawing on Judas, Brutus, and Cassius. I do not believe that gnawing on Brutus and Cassius is really a punishment for Lucifer, but I believe that having to gnaw on Judas is since Judas betrayed God. Which means Lucifer is punishing someone that did the same thing as him. Finally, one of the last things that I think make Lucifer’s position in Hell so contrapasso is that he is shedding tears of blood. I mentioned earlier how arrogant Lucifer is and being that he is now constantly shedding tears of blood I believe this is hard for his personality. How I look at it is, that blood is a sign of defeat or injury. Lucifer believes he is the most powerful but having to constantly cry blood has to somehow make him feel defeated or
