Luke’s Mom is a country woman who runs the family farm. She is very protective over Luke and encourages him to quit bull riding. She tells him that bull riding isn't worth the money and that she would much rather lose the farm over losing him.
The Narrator is Nicholas Sparks himself. He narrates the story in a third-person point of view. This is significant to this story because it gives the reader insight to what is going to happen to or with a character before the character themselves knows. It creates a more interesting affect on the story and allows the reader to predict what is about to happen next.

The opening chapter is extremely important because it sets the stage for the entire book. It begins with Ira’s wreck. It sets the entire mood for the story and immediately grabs the reader's attention. Here you see Luke and Sophia working together to save this man's life. You see the compassion that Sophia has as she waits in the hospital with him and later reads him all of his letters because he is no longer able to. Critics believed that the story glorified animal cruelty. The novel was being turned into a movie. Before the releasing of the movie they held a rodeo to bring in the public and promote the movie. This event brought up most of the controversy with the story. “The Cruelest Ride: Electric prods, spurs and bucking straps,” read one poster. As for the novel itself, while bull riding is an important element, has many moving moments, and for large stretches it's not really about bull riding.
