Romeo and Juliet were never truly in love, but truly in lust. We all know that at the end of the play, they both kill themselves. They never understood how to communicate their feelings about each other because they were too tied up in their physical feelings. They never saw passed each other’s appearance. In Shakespeare’s, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the playwright conveys the message that young love is confusing as emphasized by the protagonist's feelings of love and lust. Romeo and Juliet are so young and innocent. They are not in love but in lust. We can see this at the beginning of the play. Romeo and Juliet meet at a Capulet party. As talked about in the previous paragraph, they get married hours within knowing each other. The two are so physically attracted to one another. Romeo and Juliet never have a deep conversation with each other. The only thing they can talk about is how much the two admire each other. In the balcony scene, Romeo states, “But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun” (Shakespeare 79). All throughout the play, there are many examples of Romeo and Juliet just admiring each other. That is simply the only thing they can talk about with one another. That is not true love, but true lust. If they expect to be together forever, they must talk about more than just their “love” for one another. What are their problems? What are their goals in life? Those things need to be addressed in a true relationship. Noonan states, “Often in relationships of lust, both parties aren’t interested in building a deeper foundation, rather they’re chasing an exhilarating desire. If you find yourself uninterested in getting to know a person on a deeper level, finding common interests, and connecting beneath the surface, there’s likely no evidence of real love in your partnership.” This statement greatly relates to Romeo and Juliet's relationship. One of the main reasons leading to their relationships downfall is not considering what they are getting themselves into. This, considering the fact that their families are enemies. They never get passed their appearances and never get to understand each other
