The play revolves around the love story of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, who fall deeply in love despite the feud between their families. Throughout the play, Shakespeare explores the themes of love, obsession, societal pressures, and their consequences. This essay will analyze Romeo and Juliet’s intense love, the destructive nature of obsession in the play, and how societal pressures affect their relationship. Romeo and Juliet’s love is intense from the beginning as they fall instantly in love after just one glance at each other at Capulet’s party. Their passion grows stronger with every interaction they have. For instance, when Romeo climbs over the walls of her balcony to see her again he declares his passion by saying, “With love’s light wings did I o’erperch these walls; For stony limits cannot hold love out” (Act 2 Scene 2).
