Greed, lust, gluttony, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. Ever since the Middle Ages the Roman Catholic Church has portrayed flaws within humanity as the seven deadly sins. While this concept isn’t new, sins represent how evil can come in many different forms. True evil comes from within and is defined by an action committed with disregard for other living beings; or in other words self-interest. Self-interest is something all humans are born with and often synonymous to the seven deadly sins.
Humans get grouped into certain categories all the time, fat, smart, sarcastic, etc... Thomas H. Benton classifies his college students in a whole new perspective by dividing his students into groups pertaining to the 7 deadly sins. Thomas creates a sense of separation via indulgences: things we shouldn't do, but we do anyway because they ultimately bring us pleasure. Each of Thomas' categories focuses on different sins, pride, envy, gluttony, greed, anger, sloth, and lust.
The Catholic Church maintains that seven vices in particular to breaking one or more of the Ten Commandments. These particular bad habits are called the Seven Deadly sins because, according to Catholicism, they’re sins that kill the life of sanctifying grace. Pope Gregory the Great made up the list in the 6th century, and in the 14th century, Geoffrey Chaucer popularized them in his Canterbury Tales. In the Bible states , “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers” (Proverbs 6:16-19). The Sins of Society The seven deadly sins are lust, greed, gluttony, laziness, wrath, envy, and pride. All in which people indulge in to some extent. Some work to be more wealthy and others take pride in things they excel in, these sins both seem harmless when in small doses. However, few individuals let greed and wrath drive them to much greater sins such as burglary, theft, and murder.

Humans are all born with certain expectations as they grow up; however, does our society fully shape who we will or should be? Or do our human tendencies take over and lead us through to our ultimate victory or demise? Although Puritan society places strong emphasis on acting morally and spiritually righteous, the instinctive nature of human self preservation emerges through the involvement of temptations such as lust and pride, even in a community of strict catholics.
Sin was mentioned consistently between both readings, with Reeves’ work revealing that medieval moral theologians broke down sins based on their severity, in reference to the seven deadly sins. Since Pope Gregory the Great (reigned 590–604), these sins had been held to be the source of all other sins. Lechery, which refers to acts that violate the Church's teachings on sexuality, is a better translation of the sin that is frequently referred to as lust. Churchgoers believed that it was the most minor of the capital vices: The most terrible sin, pride, came from mutilation of the profound idea of mankind, however, indecency was a bending of a divine being given staff, the sex drive (211). In chapter 9 of Medieval Europe, despite whatever sin was committed under Gregorian Reform, Peter Damian ventured to Milan where he lowered the ecclesiastical overseer, “forcing them to confess their sins publicly and promise to change their ways” (Bennett, 172).
For centuries, women have been taught that the Seven Deadly Sins are things to be avoided at all costs. Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth are seen as the hallmarks of a bad person, and women who indulge in these sins are often labeled as "bad girls" or "sluts." But what if the Seven Deadly Sins are not so bad for women? What if they are essential for our liberation?
Sin is an inevitable element of the human condition. Response to transgressions affect how others perceive themselves and how their peers view them. Moral consequences of sin vary from person to person. Some may feel shame or sorrow because of sin, others feel compelled to sin again after sinning one time. Many seek redemption through giving back and providing charity.

It also stated in the Bible about lying. A false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive is considered as lying. Lying can lead to bad relationships and many other things like trying to lie your way of trouble, when the truth could set you free and it wouldn't make you feel that much guilt afterwards. The reasons most people lie is because they have something to hide or they are trying to see how far they can push the lies, and to make their story sound better than it actually is. The seven sins would be apart of lying in a way.
In the Inferno, Dante describes the different levels of hell and the punishment which corresponds to the sin. Dante categorize hell into three major sins consisting of incontinence, violence, and fraudulent. Fraudulent is portrayed as the worse sin in the Inferno while incontinence is seen as a less serious sin. Each category has sinners which have all been punished for their wrong doings in life. The three major sins consist of circles where Dante separates the different sinners.
Through life there are many sins that have the potential to keep us from a Heavenly afterlife. These ungodly acts are titled The 7 Deadly Sins, which are: Greed Wrath, Vanity,Envy, Lust, Gluttony and Sloth. The father of these sins is Sloth, or Laziness. Living a life of laziness and carelessness will bring about the idea that nothing matters,creating a sinful mindset. This shows as young Hamlet struggles with his father's death.
Dante’s Inferno details the long journey of Dante and Virgil, throughout the bowels of Hell, or the Inferno. Dante’s Inferno is organized into nine different levels, each distributing a different and awful punishment to every different sin. The main sins include the seven deadly sins, “Wrath, Sloth, Lust, Greed, Pride, Gluttony, Envy”, he also included “Treachery” and “Violence”. The three sins that I believe fit their sins would be “Wrath/Sulleness”, “Greed” and “Gluttony”.
Since the beginning of time, humans have felt the primal urge of lust over things they want. Lust is the desire for something, whether it be money or a relationship. Every single person has felt lust at least once in their lifetime. The most common form of lust is the sexual desire for another person. The desire and lust for women is ever prominent in culture and art.
