Lying As Evidence In Research Papers

529 Words3 Pages

Lying is a way to mislead people or sometimes simply convince other people that it is true, which is not the actual case (Bhatt, 2009). Human-beings were always interested how to find out whether this particular person is lying or not. Nowadays, one of methods people start to use is fMRI or ERP. This particular method has a lot of strengths since relatively it is pretty accurate since brains “cannot lie”, nevertheless, it is a still questionable method since it is really hard to interpret the results because it is quite difficult to realize which areas of the brain is actually working more (in most cases just a little bit) than the others.

has shown that lying can be distinguished from telling the truth by using fMRI. The main aim of the study was to find out how accurately fMRI can detect deception in the individual. In this research, participants had to perform in mock crime by stealing a watch or a ring and up to their task and then they had to lie by themselves or with others or tell the truth inside of fMRI machine and their brain activity was measured. The main findings reveal that fMRI was relatively accurate when it comes to identifying whether a person is lying or not (it reached over 90% of accuracy). Overall, according to the authors, it is a first study that tried to detect deception at the individual level and this is why this method can be used as a lie-detector in the
