Lying is a horrible habit that many people get sucked into. Even one small, "white" lie can get bigger and bigger until it can no longer be controlled! Not only does lying demolish all trust, but it can be caused by the need of attention, just like in the classic children’s story, The Boy Who Cried Wolf. In the story the boy keeps yelling at the other villagers warning them of a wolf, as a result they all freak out and try to save him, they soon find out that there really isn’t a wolf and they are all furious. The boy does this a couple more times, but finally one day a wolf really does come, and when the boy yells for help nobody comes because of all times that he lied before. Some people use lying as a way to get what they want. For example, if someone is trying to get into a certain college, they might lie on their application about their extracurricular activities. Whereas some people lie solely out of shame, meaning, they don't feel like they meet other's expectations so they lie in order to try and meet those expectations (What causes compulsive lying in adults, 2013). The most common and least known trigger of lying can actually be from an enabler. For example, when a child gets into a cookie jar when they aren’t supposed to, later, the parents see the child and ask if they got into the cookie jar, the child replies no. However, when the child lies and replies no, the parent might say, “I think you’re lying, you have chocolate all over your face.” All this does is let the child know that next time, they have to wipe the chocolate off their face.
