Organizational culture is the story of why and how the employees of an organization pursue achieving their vision. Furthermore, it encompasses the values the group holds as important, influencing the behavior and attitudes of employees by giving them a sense of belonging and purpose in the narrative. While MCOE has no official code of values it does have a robust mission statement and certainly works towards creating a climate that encourages lifelong learning, good health, teamwork, social skills and creating positive opportunities for students and employees. Janitors make sure classrooms are clean, teachers give lessons, nurses administer first aid, all serve to remove barriers and provide boosters to student learning. MCOE makes attempts at reminding employees that they are all working together to achieve their goals all departments working together produce amazing results. Often these situations occur during student individualized educational plan meetings, where staff must work together to come up with strategies to assist students with disabilities in reaching their goals. Martina a young lady with a hearing deficit and cognitive delay requires speech therapy, hearing aid monitoring, an instructional aide who is proficient in sign language and an adapted curriculum. Collaboration and teamwork become essential to address the challenges of teaching students in special education. “When multiple people in the work unit are engaged in serving behaviors, the culture is perceived by participants as one defined by putting the needs of others first and behaving with integrity” (linden 1437). Megan an instructional aide reassigned to work in a classroom with autistic students finds herself responsible for keeping a large group of students on task while the assigned teacher Lisa works one on one with pupils. Drastically different than her last assignment the changes have Megan feeling as if she is being punished for doing her job well, she now has a heavier workload to manage while the teacher appears to be taking it easy. Because no explanation was given for the changes and the division of tasks in the classroom Megan is resistant to the change and responds by calling in sick frequently. Communication is key during the transition period and a lack of communication results in many employees believing they are being abused and there is rational for the changes.
