In William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth,’ the play is about the consequences of ambition and moral corruption, as shown by the haunting of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Furthermore, justice is served at the end of the play through Macbeth’s beheading and overall restoration to Scotland, under the rightful leadership of Malcolm. At the start of the play, 3 witches appear and say "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" (Shakespeare 1.1.10), thus setting the tone of the whole play. This quote is not only the most notable from the play, but foreshadows the meaning of the play completely. “Fair is foul” means that things that seem fair may be deceptive or corrupt. Whilst “Foul is fair”, evil things can be disguised as good things, similar to the quote “Things aren’t always as they seem”, hinting that something bad can be hidden as something good or vice versa. "I have no spur / To prick the sides of my intent, but only / Vaulting ambition, which o’er leaps itself / And falls on th’ other—" (Shakespeare 1.7.25-28) quote demonstrates his internal moral conflict about murdering King Duncan, as well as his only reason to kill his beloved king is his own ambition and want to be rule. After killing King Duncan, Macbeth shows his guilt and remorse in this quote “Methought I heard a voice cry 'Sleep no more! Macbeth murders the innocent sleep," (2.2.33-34).”. In Macbeth sleep is considered innocent, after King Duncan is murdered in his ‘innocent sleep’ Macbeth is stripped of his innocence and he begins to regret his actions. Macbeth’s mind begins to play tricks on him with the hallucination of the voices. This scene demonstrates the immediate impact of killing King Duncan on Macbeth and his loss of innocence. This symbolizes the consequences of moral transgressions, and how Macbeth's actions lead to his internal downfall and overall premature
