The characters of Macbeth and Beowulf have many similarities as well as some differences. In these two stories, the main characters are considered to be a heroes. These characters are both kings and they share a common trait of being over confident. Although similar in some ways, the stories are written in different time periods. Beowulf is very courageous and fights with honor against Grendel and his mother. He becomes king because of his courage and by defeating evil. Macbeth is over ambitious and only becomes king by killing people and even killing the ruling king himself.
Moreover, Macbeth is considered a tragic hero, and Beowulf is an epic hero. They are both high ranking individuals, but they take different paths to climb the ranking ladder. Upon their deaths, the people loved Beowulf and give him a proper funeral. On the other hand, Macbeth is not liked at the time of his death. Beowulf actually was the stronger between the two. Beowulf had the confidence and the strength inside him, but Macbeth uses outside help to give him those qualities. .Macbeth was more of a cheater. Beowulf was considered honorable and fearless. Both men are considered courageous, since Beowulf showed his courage when he fought Grendel, Grendel’s mother and finally the dragon. Beowulf knew there was a chance he would die fighting the dragon, but chose to do it anyway to protect his people. Macbeth was also courageous because to kill the king you could have to show courage to do so. The men shared many character traits, they just used them in different ways throughout their lives.
