Macromolecules Lab Report

Humans consume a variety of foods on a dialy bases, but what makes up these foods. In this lab we will test for macromolecules in a variety of substances. In order to fully comprehend this lab one should be famillar with the various macromolecules. The four main macromolecules are protein, carbohydrates, lipids and nucliec acids, but in this investigation we will be only testing for protein, carbohydrates, and lipids. The term macromolecule refers to a "large molecule which is built by joining subunits called monomers"(Module 2: Macromolecules, 2016). To begin with carbohydrate is one type of macromolecule that will be tested in this lab. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary "a carbohydrate is a substance found in foods that provides …show more content…

For example, carohydrates are composed of sugars, and they are broken down into monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides. Now the more amount of monosaccharides there are, the sweeter the sugar will be. An example of this can be candies. Disaccharides, such as lactose, are found in milk, but too much of lactose milk can raise the PH blood level of a person, which can affect them, and might even lead to death. Another biological molecule is fats. Fats, which are lipids, produce twich as much energy that carbohydrates produce. The more "fat" foods a person eats, the quicker they will be able to gain weight and grow bigger than their size. Now there is this fat called cholesterol, which is not good to consume to much off because cholesterol can cause plague to build up in our bloodstream, which will eventually block the blood flow into the bloodstream, and as a result, it will cause health problems and might even lead to death. Last biological molecule are proteins. Proteins give humans defence and they help with building muscle and helping people to stay in shape. A lot of athletes take protein shakes and eat a lot of meat, which consist of proteins to gain muscle and become stronger. Overall, proteins are the most vital, since they also help with reactions that occur in our bodoies and also help to make our immune system …show more content…

We should reconsider cleaning the test tubes before the lab even if it may seem clean because it may carry some left overs from a previous reaction, resulting in an insufficient outcome. Exprimental error can have a huge impact on the results on the lab weather its due to measurement error or cross sontamination so it allways key to be catious. Furthemore this experiement has helped us learn on how do we use our knowledge learned in class to predict and make hypothesis on what we might get on some of our reactions. It was also fun doing it and each one of us has actually learned something from it. This lab also proved our hypothesis correct and did change colors to their reactive colors when specific nutrients were present. Some of the solution had multiple nutrients in them and we were able to figure them out by identifying which test the unknown resulted positively. As we enjoyed every part of this lab we recommend to have a side activity where we have to investigate what might be the unknown solutions be using our results, this will make the lab more intresting and challenging. It will influence us to reseach more about chemical makeups of foods in order to determine what the unkowns solutions where based upon the results aquirred from the
