By assisting a person to access a wide range of services you are encouraging to look at their options, entitlements and choices. This promotes wellbeing and looks after the individual as a whole person. It can give them a more positive out look and promote good mental health. If a person has for example access to libraries, support groups or resource Centre’s with encouragement this can promote a more positive outlook on their circumstances and then have power over their own lives. By giving access to gyms and healthy eating it can empower them to know about their own physical limitations and improve their physical stamina.
Case Presentation of Seth The human service field is very extensive, with numerous professions falling under the vast human services umbrella. Human services include all jobs which provide a service to society in times of crisis ("Public health career guide: Human Services," 2015, para. 4). Therefore, the human service field includes workers trained to help people cope with crisis or chronic situations where the person feels they need assistance regaining their personal power and self-sufficiency. Often times the situation the client needs help with are external, such as the loss of a job, the need for food, shelter or for help leaving a dangerous situation.

The etymological origin of the word ‘rational’ can be traced back to the late 14th century from the Latin word rationalis which means ‘of belonging to reason or reasonable’. Rationality became the key component in the analysis of human nature and its relation with the society in the following centuries. There were several interpretations of the idea of ‘rationality’ by theorists like Weber and Parsons who said that human action involved both rational and non-rational elements. In the late 20th century, the debates on rationality entered the field of political analysis. Rational choice theory became one of the most dominant approaches of political science.
Rational Choice Theory, in layman terms sees people as maximizers of self-interest who engage in a cost-benefit calculation to achieve a better outcome over a worse one (Lim, 78). The self-interest of an individual is subject to change, based on the surrounding conditions. This is further explained by the assumption that rationality can be institutionally, culturally or socially defined (Lim, 82). Hence, it can be said that rational choice theory takes into account the effect of the environment on the decision making capability of an individual. This is also referred to as the ‘’thick variant’’ of rationality and using this variant enables this theory to be applied on both micro and meso-levels.
Correspondingly, it will guide me to provide my clients with the ability to make informed consent. Additionally, this value is important to my future practice because it ensures that I become an advocate for my clients in every capacity, including human rights. Lastly, as a social worker, I will ensure that I work towards my clients being free from violence and the threat of violence (Heinonen & Spearman, 2010, p. 34). Moreover, 77% of the people said they would purchase an umbrella for a high price on a rainy day if it were necessary. However, 90% of the people will not buy the same umbrella for even half the price if it was a sunny day (Summer, 2012).
