A tipping point can be viewed as the significant point in a developing condition that precedes to contemporary and irreversible change. This notion has been illustrated in Malcolm Gladwell’s book “The Tipping Point”, he provides us with an understanding as to how we could perhaps induce a tipping point or plague in our own lives. If we obtain cognizance about what makes tipping points, only at that point will we be able to understand exactly how and why things happen in our world. The tipping point is that miraculous moment when a thought, style, or public actions crosses a brink and proliferates like a cell. Gladwell’s ideology can be seen in a variety of settings; some examples are when someone ill starts an epidemic of the flu, when an aimed
The book Outliers The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell is about how the successful people in this world came to be as successful as they are. These ways include birth dates and years, where they come from and their culture, the language spoken and the classes they took. The outliers in this book were given opportunities and since they had the right mind set, they were able to take it and become the people they are. Each chapter is a story of a different person’s life and how they reached their level of success. Then, towards the end of the chapter, it explains how they reached it.
“I only raised my hand once.” were the words that Mr. Berger-White said to the class. He explained how he raised his hand once during a class and his teacher did not approve his comment. Besides the fact that his teacher did not like his answer, he took a risk to raise his hand and speak. This was the first time that the idea of taking risks was really implanted in my mind.
MIND-MAP WRITE-UP The mind map I create based on The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell summarizes the examples Gladwell describes throughout the novel in order to introduce and explain his theories. The rules of the tipping point (the Law of a Few, the Stickiness Factor, and the Power of Context) are hidden in the images of my illustration. To begin, the Law of a Few is discussed first in the novel.
The most vital factors leading me to where I am now are a result of a mix of opportunities at the right
Gladwell argues that our greatest strengths can also become our greatest weaknesses. I find Gladwell’s argument to be false based on the fact that the underdog doesn’t always win. He brings into question whether Goliath was actually a strong giant or an incapable underdog; Was David a dark horse or was he favored to win. Gladwell tells many tales in which the underdog faces obstacles they must overcome to succeed, but the underdog can’t always succeed. This is one of the flaws in Gladwell’s argument.
Barack Hussein Obama is an American politician who served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009 to 2017. He is the first African American to have served as president, as well as the first born outside the contiguous United States. In this speech he gave at the Democratic National Convention he reflects on his upbringing and his beating the odds with faith in the possibilities. His speech concerned the unnecessary and artificial divides in American politics and culture, emphasizing the importance of unity in our country, not just red states for Republicans and blue states for Democrats. His audience was community.
As Gladwell mentions that the broken window theory and the graffiti on the subway are serious problems, so Gladwell mention a way that “Because he believed that, like graffiti, fare-beating could be a signal, a small expression of disorder that invite much more serious crime” (153) and “the team would nab fare-beaters one by one, handcuff them, and leave them standing”(154) “Graffiti” and “fare-beating” are like broken window theory, if nobody cares the problems, then, the problem will still exist and become more seriously. So handcuff people without paying a token is a method to renovate the system and change their minds. As the renovation, people will change their minds and not be evading the system again. As lots of people being handcuff,
Gladwell in his piece Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted actively rebuttals the argument that social media can be a tool used for social activism. Gladwell undermines the authority many people believe social media to hold by pointing out the formula for social media is a large range of networking; not hierarchy which creates roles, jobs, and leaders (410, Gladwell). Gladwell continues to assert that this networking is held together by weak ties of fake friends, whereas he supports face to face interaction that sparks true connection and change (406). He further utilizes the example of the lost phone and bone marrow transplant to highlight his view that social change does not come from participation which “go fund me” and
(Obama 18). In these two statements that Obama made to support his claim, he is trying to say that what environment you are in, what situation you are in should not affect your future and your education because just what you are going through does not directly affect your effort or determination to make your future different from what your future is if you give in to those hardships. Obama’s use of the rhetorical appeal of pathos helps with the supporting evidence for his claim that going to school is a benefit for student’s future, because when he uses pathos that causes emotions in the reader of his speech that of other people can go through many hardships and still get a proper education then they can do it to. It helps them believe that they can do whatever they put their mind
ROBERT CIALDINI Robert Cialdini is the most read author of “Influence: Science”, “Practice and Influence: Psychology of Persuasion”, and Robert Cialdini Quotes, which has greatly influenced many people around the world. To make this possible and a conquered zeal, he spent his 30 years on researching and studying the subject. In fact, that is the reason why people refer to him as the Godfather of Influence. Born and raised in an Italian family, the culture and neighborhood where he was raised, was German.
Due to the examples that Gladwell presented and his convincing analysis, I can agree with his ideas about what creates a successful individual. One idea that I especially agreed with was the topic that discussed the effect of summer breaks on children’s learning. Gladwell writes that, “Virtually all of the advantage that wealthy students have over poor students is the result of differences in the way privileged kids learn while they are not in school” (Gladwell 258). When Gladwell presented this idea about the caustic effects of summer vacation, I was a little skeptical at first. However the evidence he presented and his analysis undoubtedly showed how the learning gap between poor and rich children is created over summer break.
Abortion is a touchy subject for most people, and is common medical procedure that is performed in the U.S. even all around the world, and over 40% of women will on go this procedure to stop a pregnancy at some point in their life. (emedicine.com). And even though all types of women no matter what class or race typically may do this is their life, the majority of them have the tendency to be “young, white, unmarried, poor, or over the age of 40.” Abortion is one of the more common procedure performed in women.
After my experience in Africa, I know that success, for me, has been redefined. I still feel the need to get good grades and go to a good college, but I must make a difference in the lives of the girls I just met. Once you are a witness to something unjust, you cannot close your eyes and make it go away. You must make a
Instead, his mother taught him at home throughout the week. “I was not as focused as I should have been,” exclaimed President Obama. With many of second chances, he was able to go to college and law school and still succeed even though there were other things in life that tried to hold him back. Looking back on his struggles, Obama
