Malcom Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point, notes in paragraph three that “…crime is contagious—just a fashion trend is contagious—that it can start with a broken window and spread to an entire community.” This explains an epidemic. An epidemic is defined as a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time. However, the “infectious disease” can refer to anything, such as a fashion trend or a crime. There are several epidemics within the community of students at Burke County High School.
In the story of My Kid’s Dog, you find humor in a sad situation and a twist of changed feelings. The lead character, the father hates the family dog but is trying to give the dog a better burial than the yard. Now at first, you may not like the father because he hates a dog, but as the story progresses a likable character starts to evolve. I believe the author chose the father as the protagonist because it is different.

Although he uses several statistics and resources, Gladwell is not fully effective in proving his claim because he limits his ideas to thresholds, he does not use enough ethos, and he contradicts himself several times. One can easily debate that this claim does not provide enough evidence. “Attack Dogs” From the 1950s through the 1960s the United States presence the effort by the African American community to gain equality and eliminate segregation in what is called the Civil Rights Movement. One of the images that highly influenced the outcome of the movement and helped achieve legislation that treated everyone equal was “Attack Dogs,” a photograph taken by Charles Moore in 1963 and published in the LIFE magazine. This photograph helped shed light on the unethical treatment of the peaceful protesters by police officers in Birmingham, Alabama, which essentially aided in gaining even more momentum and support for the Civil Rights Movement. Writer John Kaplan from LIFE magazine depicts Charles Moore as the most well-known and influential photographer during the Civil Rights Movement from 1958-1965 (127).
A personal belief that many people have is that puppies are one of the most adorable creatures in the world. The young, energetic, playfulness of one can bring joy and love to people who are a fan of dogs. The story by George Saunders titled “puppy” brings to light the youthful nature of children and how they are like puppies needing understanding and guidance. On the adult side of the spectrum, adults may not always make the best decisions just like puppies when it comes to making choices about the people they love and having clear judgment. The story is set in the belief that we prioritize the people we love based on the conditions and choices that come with that person.

Based on a real story, Into the Wild can make us think from different perspectives about what the main character Christopher McCandless did. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer is a dramatic but also remarkable story from a young, newly graduated, college student that escaped for a long wild journey but never came back. As time passes throughout the book, the reader may notice how the main character interacts with society and nature, finally McCandless dies in the wild but even though he was struggling for survival he died happy. Some people never get out of their comfort zone, others are tired of it and retire from their comfort zone to have different experiences in life, some are good enough or some are terrible.

Ultimately, Gladwell suggests that for social change to be successful it requires hierarchical organization and strong ties. Social media is a perfect means of building networks and increasing participation in those who have no personal ties with a particular cause. Although, the lack of strong personal ties is what causes the lack of motivation for people to get involved, and these networks are only effective at lessening the motivation that participation requires. Being a teacher is a journey that has much to do with learning about yourself and being aware that what happens in your classroom reflects only on how are you with yourself. Teachers are not conscious that they project into students, and that affects how things go in the classroom.
