Malcolm Little as a child, was a student with so much potential to become a successful and happy individual with a healthy career and family. He had very inspired, motivated parents and the healthy example they set for Malcolm deeply impacted his outlook on life early on. This outlook began to change based on events that accumulated into Malcolm’s hatred of white people. His life dramatically changed when his mother emotionally and mentally broke down after her boyfriend left her (later, following her husband’s death). This was a critical step toward becoming a "hustler." Malcolm effortlessly became accustomed to the ghetto, despite his young age and rural upbringing. He met someone named Shorty who would soon teach him things about the ghetto and of ghetto lifestyle but overall, negatively impact Malcolm’s life. Shorty introduced Malcolm to his friends, who introduced him to playing the “numbers” or gambling, drinking, and even smoking marijuana. After meeting Shorty, Malcolm stated “Shorty would take me to groovy, frantic scenes in different chicks' and cats' pads, where with the lights and juke down mellow, everybody blew gage and juiced back and jumped. I met chicks who were fine as May wine, and cats who were hip to all happenings. That paragraph is deliberate, of course; it's just to display a bit more of the slang that was used by everyone I respected as "hip" in those days. And in no time at all, I was talking the slang like a lifelong hipster,” (Chapter 4, page 59). Malcolm would soon meet a black girl named Laura and they began a relationship together. Malcolm’s abandoning of Laura for a white girl named Sophia, was arguably another significant turning point of his life, specifically, his life in Boston. This outlook began to change based on events that accumulated into Malcolm’s hatred of white people. His life dramatically changed when certain events took place. The combination of tragedies Malcolm experienced and the prevalence of racism in his life drastically altered Malcolm’s goals and aspirations for himself and led him to believe that he wasn’t worth a successful life. He felt that he really had no chance at becoming a lawyer after Mr. Ostrowski’s statement. He thought the only way to survive as a black person was to do what others did so successfully, and illegally. A person’s environment, circumstances and upbringing can seriously impact a person’s life, and through that, a person’s self-confidence. The significant changes in Malcolm X’s life profoundly impacted his outlook of himself, his potential, and, as a result, his life choices. The unbridled racism prevalent in this time period had negatively impacted Malcolm X’s beliefs of himself and of his potential. This led him to just go with the flow of life rather than to forge a way for himself in the world.
