Malcolm X was born May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His childhood was pretty terrible. His dad was connected to Marcus Garvey, causing his dad to instill a sense of black pride and self-reliance. He was marked by his struggles in poverty, racism, crime, foster care, and more. We’ll introduce this paper with a brief discussion of 4 main parts of his life: childhood, adult criminal, jail literacy, and spirituality. During his childhood, his family was threatened by the KKK which led them to move to Lansing, Michigan. Even though his family moved, he was still having struggles with racism and poverty. His father, Earl, was involved in heavy activism which made him a target. These acts then led him to be arrested and into incarceration in 1946, where he was sentenced to 10 years for burglary. While Malcolm was in prison, he went into a transition as a new person, if you will. He highly educated himself, reading books he wouldn’t normally read, studying subjects ranging from history and philosophy to religion, he read it all. During this time, he found himself learning about the Nation on Islam, introducing himself to a religious movement advocating for the empowerment of African Americans.
