The author’s of these sources have similar opinions on the subject of later start times for high schoolers. The author of source one, Michelle Trudeau, believes high schoolers should have later start times, and focuses on the benefits of this. The author of source two, Dan Weissman, also believes that high schoolers should have later start times, but chooses to focus on how changing school start times will be difficult in some school districts and communities. In source one, Michelle Trudeau writes about how changing school start times to later in the morning will benefit students.
For these important and practical reasons, schools should not change school start times. If schools delay the start time, after-school activities will be rescheduled and no dramatic impact on sleep times will
Imagine the benefits of having later start times for high school students. This controversial subject has been discussed by professionals over the past few years, some argue the start times are too early for teens while others tend to disagree. High school students should have later start times because it benefits their grades, their amount of sleep, and also provides advantages for the parents and School Board. By delaying the start times of the school, studies have shown improvements in grades and performance in teens. A study done by the University of Minnesota shows that by setting back start times for school showed an increase in grades 10th-12th.
Some parents in Seattle did not agree with the start times because of personal issues. Experts say that getting more sleep over night and going to school at a later time is better than going to school early in the morning and getting a couple hours of sleep the night before. “Some parents of younger children objected when bus schedules were flipped and their kids were put on an earlier schedule for next year” (Associated Press). This quote is stating that some parents are not very happy with the change in start times because bus schedules are getting changed around. I feel that if Beaumont High School adopted a later start time,
The school board is deciding to make our school a close campus. Close campus is when students are not allowed off school grounds. This is because students are late to class. There are pros with a close campus but there are also cons. I have many cons on why close campus is a bad idea.
If students have lack of sleep, they may not pay attention to the roads and the drivers on the roads, which increases the risk of traffic accidents, (according to www.npr.org). The increased risk of traffic accidents may also be because of how dark it is outside when students have to walk over to the bus stop. It’s so early when kids’ buses come, that it’s usually dark outside, and drivers may not see kids walking. The final reason why middle and high school start times should be later is for the protection of student health.
Later School Start Times “About 90% of the teens, problem is insufficient sleep” (Dr. Chen), most of the adolescents are suffering of sleep deprived which is unabling them to be healthy and pay attention in class. Many of the schedules that are given in schools are the worst for teens because one one the things they require them to do is to wake up early to attend to the classes. Middle and High School start times should start later because it will benefit students academic growth, and improve health . Starting school times later will make teen have an academic growth. Starting school later could help teens academically because, they would be more attentive to any work or test that comes their way.
It stated reasons of why school start times should be pushed back and it also stated reasons why it should not be pushed back. The reasons of why it should have outweighed the reasons of why it should not have. The main reason why it was said school start time should be later is because as teens they stay up later and while they are in school they are tired and sleep through class all year. More sleep could lessen depression, make grades become higher, makes the students have better focus, and prevent sleeping in class. In the article it was said that "Over time, sleep deprivation leads to serious consequences for academic achievement, social behavior, and the health and safety of our nation 's youth.
Also less teens get in car crashes and are at a big risk for drugs, alcohol, depression, even suicide. Teens get in crashes because they do not get enough sleep at night. Another is that grades up when teens sleep in and absences drop by 15% in Bonneville by starting school later. These are both examples why school should start later in the day. If we start school later absences would possibly go down like Bonneville did and grades will possibly go up as well, too.
In a study conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, they found that “Adolescents that go to sleep at midnight or later are also more likely to suffer from depression and have suicidal thoughts”(Start Times are Unhealthy to Students). While suicidal thoughts can lead to serious long-term problems for a specific student, but for those around them as well. Likely the most effective reason why schools should push back their start times is that of the fact that they pose a problem to teenage drivers. Findings made by the American Academy of Sleep Societies say that “There are data that demonstrate that lack of sleep has negative consequences for teens," he said. "And some data show that younger drivers are more likely to have crashes when they have inadequate sleep”(Holohan).
Schools Should Start At A Later Time Did you know that 97% of students in a recent survey agree that schools should start later? I think that schools should start later for these reasons. First, if students got to sleep longer, students would have less of a chance of getting depressed . It would also put the students health at risk for many health problems. It would also increase students test scores, and grades, because they will be more awake during class If schools that start early started later, their students would be more awake in class, getting better grades, and would not be at risk of as many health problems.
Today I’ll be addressing the argument between changing to a four-day school week from a five-day school week. In my own hoenest opinion I would rather change and have a four day school week. This is because I believe I do better in school when we have that extra day off. I am well rested and feel less stressed because I have more than enough time to get my work done. But I know that there are some cons to having a four day school week.
21% of teen motor vehicle accidents are caused by drowsy driving. Many teens everyday are complaining about their school start times being way too early. Teen tiredness is now considered to be a public health pandemic. School starting at a later time is beneficial because it helps students catch up on sleep. It helps students stay out of trouble.
Early School Start Times Most adolescents don’t get nearly the correct amount of sleep and the early school start times make it worse. Having school start later would have a great impact on teens’ overall health. Some people may say that teens should just go to sleep earlier, but its not that easy. Early school start times should be changed because they are dangerous, inconvenient, and it negatively affects body growth.
Teenagers have become much more focused on what he or she looks like. This is because, they are searching their identity, and trying to be someone that the media expects them to be. With social media, comes the stereotypical version of what a man or woman should be like. For example, women are expected to dress sexy, and have the perfect barbie doll body. Whereas men, are expected to be muscular and tall.
