The Man In the Water (Theme of the story) In the story, The Man In the Water, it is about a flight that plowed right into the dangerous and cold waters of the, Potomac River. The plane actually hit several cars and what made this crash different is in one man in specific. During hard and scary times like this, this is where we see true heros and actual men come out. Going against all odds and ignoring the fact that one may not make it through to the end but, are just as determined that this person you barely know does. In the story, The Man In the Water, the man is just that the authors main theme is going unselfish and being strong when nobody else can. This man came over the fact of death. He came over the realization that he may not survive but these others will. Nobody had to get into the water but this man did which is what made this story so memorable. The author does not believe that this man lost his fight in the water but lost his fight to the implacable personal enemy of death. Yet,whenever death was not only placed in front of these three men they decided to take it on full force because they knew that not everyone was going to die. When we look at these men, and specifically the man in the water we see that these men were courageous and brave. The author from the story, The Man In the Water, says “But he could hand life over to a stranger, and that is a power of nature too. The man in the water pitted himself against an implacable, impersonal enemy; he fought it with charity; and he held it to a standoff.
