According to Henry Fayol(1949), who is considered as the father of administrative management and also who came up with the 14 principles of management, “ To manage is to forecast, to plan, to organize, to command, to co-ordinate and to control”. To put it simply it is the act of getting things done along with the subordinates or co-workers in an organization. In other words it is a process of various functions like planning, organizing, leading and controlling the business operations in such way that will make attaining the goals set by the business firm a success.

The proper running and functioning of an organization is ensured by the existence of a management. It requires motivation and strategies which only managers can provide. It can be considered both science and as an art. Because it is based on the problems and their context and environment, management sometimes appears as science and sometimes as an art. Art and science are altogether different in nature and have different theories. Management is treated as an Art because it is more application oriented and skill is predominant in nature whereas it is treated as science because it has a predominant body of knowledge with universal validity.
