Manifestation of Internal Conflict Internal conflict is something everyone struggles with in their life, it can be as big as choosing who to be in relationships with, or who you want to marry. Internal conflict can also be small but just as equally important, as it can determine what will happen in the future. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, internal conflict plays a major role in the fate of many characters. The character Juleit’s self-conflict is manifested in the external conflict of death, including herself. When Paris goes to Juliet's tomb to bring her flowers, he finds Romeo and assumes he will do something to Juliet and Tybalt's bodies. Consequently, they get into a fight which results in Paris dying, his final words are “O, I am slain! If thou be merciful, Open the tomb, lay me with Juliet” (5.3.70-73). Given that Paris is now dead, Romeo had helped Juliet solve her conflict so she no longer has to worry about breaking her vows with Romeo. Furthermore, when Juliet awakens from her sleep and finds out that Romeo has died, in response, she says “Yea noise? Then I’ll be brief . O, happy dagger, This is thy sheath. There rust and let me die” (5.3.174-175). Since Romeo had died, Juliet could not get what she wanted which was to be with Romeo, not marry Paris. By killing herself Juliet stops her internal conflict while getting to be with her love Romeo in the end.
