People´s Republic of China doesn’t look like a “typical" communism building state. All the images people associate with communism have been masked by a modern skyline. The new skyscrapers, striving businesses and American cafes can be seen in every urban city. Also, a modern Chinese wears American and European brands as well as owns the latest gadgets. However, the party exists behind the scenes, and communist values are hidden from view. Taking a peek into the history of China can reveal how the principles of a dominating One-Party system were rooted. In the 500 B.C., Confucius taught the ideas of progress through education guided by leadership. Taking a leap to the early history, the modern Communist China was established under the rule of Mao Zedong. Today, he is referred to as the Father of Communist China and originally was one of the founding members of the Chinese Communist Party. Zedong believed that a united country led by a powerful government can accomplish anything. During his rule, Mao began many reforms,one of such was the Cultural Revolution, to create a true communist society. This horrific reform led to the death of millions until 1978 when Deng Xiaoping became the leader of China. He focused on reforming the Chinese economy. Although during Deng’s reforms the economy was a mix of socialist and free market, the Chinese Communist Party remained in control and oversaw all the changes. Despite the drastic modifications in China over the past decades, it is still internally controlled by the Communist Party of China (CPC). According to the research by the Forbes, The Economist, and McKinsey, chinese companies, especially the state-owned enterprises (SOEs), are heavily subsidized by the government and engaged in the economically unprofitable activities. Examples among many others include agricultural firms which are forced to grow staple foods instead of more profitable crops, construction companies involved in grandiose projects which waste resources while creating unsustainable and underused infrastructure, the steelmakers which create huge overcapacities through government subsidies and destroy competition on the global markets that leads to serious political frictions with other countries, mounting corporate debt created through fledging and government dependent banking system which often promotes speculation rather than growth. It might be that the economic prosperity which justified the Communist Party stay in power would slow down or even reverse in the near future due to all the inefficiencies it caused because at the end of the day the communism values are incompatible with free market economy in the long
