Marcel Duchamp was a forward thinking artist that heavily influenced other artists from the 20th century. He believed that art didn’t have to be defined by the artist technique and after a brief career painting, great works of cubism, he turned to sculpture. He was one of the first to take everyday objects and give them new meaning through his arrangements. His most famous “ready-made” sculpture was titled, “Fountain”. The piece was highly controversial and fueled heated arguments about what should and should not considered art. The original piece unfortunately disappeared shortly after it’s unveiling, even so, the piece was and is still considered to be highly influential.

Most notably in “Bicycle Wheel” 1913. Duchamp choose and old bicycle wheel with its spokes still intact and secured it, upside down to a stool, allowing the wheel to spin freely. Though Duchamp claimed that he made it simply because he like to watch the wheel spin, he claimed that he found it hypnotic and pleasing to watch, like running water or an open flame. Even so, the piece has been credited with being the beginning of an art revolution. The first of its kind, “Bicycle Wheel” was the center of many theoretical discussions in the art community. Many thought that the piece was mocking art museums by stating that that stool was representational of the pedestals used to display art and that a simply bicycle wheel was more deserving of display than that of an heroic figure.
