Marcus Antonius Speech In Julius Caesar

Today is the day. It is the day I stand in front of everyone in the forum and give my speech! Well it is not so much my speech that is important, as it is Marcus Antonius’ speech, but I will be on the rostra. I am going to portray Gaius Marius, Caesar’s uncle, by wearing his imagine during the funeral of Iulius Caesar, who unfortunately was stabbed to death by senators in the senate house. Gaius Marius was a novus homo and held consulship in 107BC and again in 104BC-100BC. He is not Caesar’s biological uncle, but married into the family with his wife, Julia, Caesar’s aunt. We are walking up to the rostra now! Caesar has already been paraded through the city.. He is in the kline position on a lectum just several yards away from me and a couple of his other ‘ancestors’. We are all wearing the imagines of his ancestors and donning their respective togas that display their political affiliations. Since Gaius Marius held a high position as consul, I am wearing a purple toga that is decorated. Now that we are in the roman forum, the funeral orations are about to begin. Since he did not have a son, his co-consul is giving the funeral oration and reading the will. After announcing all of Caesar’s accomplishments, such as being a consul, along with triumphing in Gaul, Alexandria, Pontus and Africa, the will is read. In it, Antony declares that Caesar has officially adopted his grandnephew, Gaius Octavius, as his son. Antony briefly mentions the building projects that Caesar undertook, such as the Basilica Iulia, but unfortunately he could not go in depth because the Curia Iulia is still under construction.
