The central idea of the article Essay: Why sports history is American history by, Mark Naison is women and black athletes had to fight to get their opportunities in sports. In the article it states, “Black people were not allowed to play most professional sports.” This explains one reason why Black American athletes couldn’t play professional sports. Another statement in the article says, “For most of the 1900’s, women were told sports were just for men.” This explains one reason why women couldn’t play any sports.
The author of this article is Robert Jensen. He is a journalist professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Jensen’s writing and teaching focus on interrogating power structures of race and gender. He also wrote and published The End of Masculinity; therefore this is a topic that he feels really strongly about. Jensen first published the article “The High Cost of Manliness” to argue for an end to the conception of manliness.
Most men that like women want women but underestimate their abilities. Most people believe that women are not good at sports as men. Women completed the same accomplishments and more just as men. Men and women not get the same pay amount ever since President Nixon signed law title 9 in 1972 ( Title IX and the growth of women’s Athletics). Nowadays women plays every sport that men play.
In the film Remember the Titans, gender stereotyping affects Coach Bonne and his wife's roles in society. Coach Bonne went to work and coached the football team while his wife normally stayed at home, cleaned the house, and looked after the kids. Nowadays, gender stereotyping is very serious, and many governments are trying to eradicate it. Society has changed since Margaret Mead has written Sex and Temperament; however, her concept on masculinity and femininity is still something we face to this day. Meads viewed a masculine woman as someone who is more dominant and a feminine man as someone who is gentle and submissive. Today’s generation regard reverse gender roles, which are masculine women and feminine men, as different than normal, but not as drastic as Mead’s perception. People expect the man to be the head of the household and the woman to be the person who takes care of all the household chores. Even though in modern society woman have more freedom and goals than in the past, they are still expected to cook the food, clean the house, and care for the children.

Gender Inequality in sports is an issue as old as sport itself. I choose this topic because we as a society seem to sweep it under the rug time after time. Women in sports however, try to address the issue only to have it go on deaf ears, leaving them to continue in the sport hoping something will change. Men could go and try out for different sports teams and workout but for women they were only allowed to stay home to cook and clean. There were some events women could participate in but it could not be competitive, it was focused on getting active and staying active.
